Brauer Museum of Art

By Christina Jacobs

As you step into an art museum, the quietness envelopes you. Nothing is needed to support the beauty of the art hanging on the walls. It is no different at the Brauer Museum of Art on the University of Valparaiso campus in Valparaiso . There is a hush in the seven galleries as you look at the 19th and 20th century works of art.

The museum focuses on American and also Midwestern art, while also featuring a collection of world religious art. Artists such as Frederic Edwin Church, Asher B. Durand, Childe Hassam , Georgia O'Keeffe, and Ed Paschke are highlighted.

The museum also houses the largest known collection of works by Junius R. Sloan, a Hudson River School painter who lived and worked in the Midwest . Sloan painted the sweeping landscapes of the Hudson River School but his works feature much more Midwestern scenes, like views of Lake Michigan from areas near Chicago and Milwaukee .

The museum offers viewing of some collections, with information about the works and artists, on its web page www.valpo.edu/artmuseum.

Admission is free to the museum, and donations are accepted.
