Between the Covers:

"Lively" is the Word!

The CD Lift Me Up, composed and sung by Rose Pawlowski, is a delightful dozen of her original songs plus “We Are Free” written by Rev. Sam Windell. Pawlowski is energetically supported by Douglas Blue Feather on the flute and ten others on guitars, drums, keyboards, an Udu drum [whatever that is!] with backup vocals by Ginger Curry.

The best word for this collection is lively. Listening to it on my computer as I type, I find the beat irresistible, so that my gnarled digits dance along the keys and my octogenarian bod swivels in my chair.  Pawlowski expresses a compelling enthusiasm in the title song but that can be said as well of the other renditions.

Pawlowski’s voice ranges from a hearty belting out to an unexpected sweetness and includes as well a talent for a sort of yodeling insertion of a high, suddenly wonderful note. She always sounds as if she is floating joyously in her singing.

The lyrics included in the cover insert and the title qualify this album as spiritual praise singing and inspiration. “Get on. Get on. Get on with your good self.” or “Lift me up and take me over. Hold my hand and lead the way. Let me know I’m never alone.”

And in the 13th song, “Oh Lord Bless This House,” based on a poem by James Dillett Freeman, the vocalist calls forth an echoing chorus reminiscent of black church services. “’Tis the Season” would make a great Christmas carol.
